Describing Places
Read the notes below and write a
description of a place you know well (for example, your house or school, a
favorite holiday resort, etc.) Write how you feel about this place.
Tips:
·
Divide
your composition into several paragraphs.
·
Introduction: explain your reasons for choosing the place you are
going to write about. You may give an overall picture of the place.
·
Details: give particular details of the place, especially
those that have a special meaning for you. You may choose to describe one
aspect of the place, which is unusual or especially important for some reason.
·
Conclusion: Talk about your feelings for the place and whether
you think you will always feel the same way about it.
Tips for all descriptive
compositions
·
Each
paragraph should contain one topic.
·
Don't
forget to use connectors and the proper punctuation.
·
Remember
that you can use the words: with, who, which
-in order to make more interesting sentences.
For example:
I lived in a house. It was old. It was cold in the winter.
I lived in an old house, which was cold in the winter.
·
Use
as many adjectives to describe the person, event, values, experience.
·
Use
the dictionary to find synonyms. Don't forget that the dictionary is
your best friend during the test!!!!
·
For
example, if you know one adjective: beautiful, you will find some more
in order to enrich your composition's vocabulary: attractive,
fair, beauteous, lovely, pretty, handsome, etc…
Here are
some more adjectives to remember:
excellent,
marvelous,
fantastic,
wonderful,
extraordinary,
incredible,
unique - can fit any description!!!
Here is an example of
such a composition.
Write a description of a place you
knew well when you were a child. Explain how and why it was important to you.
My favorite place which was very
important to me when I was a child was my best friend's house. Although it was
just an hour's drive from my house, I can still remember how much I looked
forward to going there. It was situated on a Moshav
and this might be the reason that I always associated it with freedom.
The house itself was surrounded by a
large garden filled with flowers and apple trees. There was also a tennis court
near it and a swimming pool. Now, whenever I smell the scent of roses or
apples, it takes me back to those happy days.
Inside the house, it was always cool in
the summer and warm in the winter. I remember especially the living room, where
we used to spend a lot of time reading, watching television or playing games,
such as, checkers or backgammon. The kitchen also had a special appeal to me as
we often ate there supper or even breakfast on the morning when I slept there.
The bed was large and soft and I used to sink in it, dreaming about all the
things we would do the following day.
There is no doubt that the memories of my
friend's house are and will remain some of the most important and unique
memories of my life.
